Shine bright like a HTC U11

Ditching your buttons for a squeeze.

HTC’s latest offering in the smartphone market has a unique way of interaction as far as smartphones go – by squeezing the sides of HTC U11. At first look, the device is hefty and large, but gorgeous to look at especially with its dazzling colours. The unit we received came in Sapphire Blue, which is the more eyecatching colour aside from Solar Red.

Onto the phone itself, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with 6GB of RAM, so navigating the phone is a breeze. We have tested the device with multiple background apps and demanding games, and it still held up without much complaints. Switching apps by double tapping the menu is lightning fast as well.

The camera capabilities steps into the spotlight this year, especially with a DxOMark score of 90, topping the Google Pixel by a singular point. Taking that score with a grain of salt, we tested the camera capabilities and it proved to be an amazing pocket shooter with its 12-megapixel (UltraPixel 3) rear camera. While testing, we found that it took amazing pictures even in low-light situations, especially with the help of a superfast autofocus, which is a plus when you are fighting against light to take a good picture. Audio recording is also improved, due to omni-directional microphones on the device. You can zoom in on your target to amplify their sound while recording.

Another new feature introduced along with this device, Edge Sense, brings you a new way to interact with your smartphone. In the settings, you can activate or deactivate this feature, and when activated, you can even customise it to activate a certain app. For example, a light squeeze will turn on your camera, while squeezing and holding will turn the flashlight on/off.

The U11 is a brilliant device to look at, it sports a 5.5-inch 3D glass screen, and a liquid glass surface on the back. Depending on the source and angle of light hitting the device, the device will look a different colour. For example, the Solar Red colour variant of the U11 will sometimes look yellow, depending on the angle you are looking at.
